Happy Mardi Gras!!!

Happy Mardi Gras!!!

Happy Mardi Gras Everyone!

Here in Louisiana Mardi Gras (Fat Tuesday) is in full swing.  Although the weather is wet, it will not dampen the revelers’ spirits.  Mardi Gras is steeped in tradition and is a whole industry in itself.  One of the traditions that I love the most is the King Cake.

You will find them on all party tables during the Mardi Gras season.

In a city well renowned for its food culture, the act of purchasing a King Cake is a beloved part of Mardi Gras. Sold only during the Carnival season, the king cake is a large braided Danish pastry, typically spiced with cinnamon and covered with green, purple, and gold sugar, corresponding to Mardi Gras’ colors.   Today King Cakes are stuffed with yummy fillings such as cream cheese, blueberry, strawberry and chocolate fillings.  Socked away inside the cake is a tiny plastic baby, and whoever discovers the little tyke in their slice is required to buy the next king cake (or host the next party).   My mouth waters just writing about them.

Local bakeries ship King Cakes all over the world.  So anyone can get a taste of Mardi Gras!

Happy Mardi Gras!  I’m off to sink my teeth into a piece of King Cake with a huge cup of café au lait.   Mmmm!

  1. Sounds like fun! Enjoy Mardi Gras and King Cake! :) Thanks for sharing tradition. Best Regards, Wendy

    • Thanks Wendy. King Cakes are definitely not a health food.

  2. I’ve never had a piece of King Cake, but I can tell by the amount of sugar sprinkled on top that my body wouldn’t adapt to it very well. LOL

I’m diabetic, so sugary loaves aren’t in my best interest. Though, it’s only fair to warn you that I would sneak a pinch off the corner, just to get a taste. :)

    • You have to indulge every so often. Thanks for visiting my site.

  3. Hi I am from Louisiana and I enjoy a good parade! Thanks for sharing this with us!
