Laundry Detergent Emergency

Laundry Detergent Emergency

So today I had an early morning meeting.   I am not too much on laying out what I am going to wear the night before for anything.  But I am early riser, so I feel that I have the luxury of time on my side.

Well guess what, the pair of slacks that I intended to wear needed to be washed.  No problem, still have plenty of time to wash, dry and press them.  Another surprise, out of laundry detergent.  Still no problem!  I don’t have to go to the store.

You see, several weeks ago I tried one of the homemade laundry detergent recipes on Pinterest and so I had all of the ingredients to make another batch.  Voila, laundry detergent on demand and at a fraction of the cost.

There are several recipes on Pinterest.  I used the one with the bar of soap.  But I found one later that uses liquid dishwashing soap, so when I need to replace the soap, I’m going to try it.

It is sooo easy and when I say a fraction of the cost, it is a fraction of the cost.  Total for the ingredients was less than $10.  But one recipe makes 5 gallons.  You read correctly, 5 gallons.  So I parsed out the ingredients to make it one gallon at a time.  So now when I need laundry detergent,  it is at my beckon call..

Check it out if you are all for saving money, time, and want to put fewer plastic bottles in the environment.  Good luck!

  1. Will have a look at that, thanks for sharing :)

    • What I like about is that you can customize whatever fragrance you like. I also made fabric softener. Works well too. Thanks for your comment.

  2. Leslie, what a great “pin” on how to make your own laundry detergent! I’ll have to see if this is safe for “HE” efficient wash machines. That would be good to know. Using Pinterest is another example of finding how-to’s that people don’t even know exist.

    • There are many pins on this and several of them specifically state that they are safe for HE machines. Good luck. I’ve made fabric softener. My next project is body wash. Will keep you posted. Thanks so much for visiting my site.

  3. Thanks for sharing this…I had seen similar on Pinintrest, , but was never sure if would work well.. How did you like the soap?

    • The soap that I used is Zotie. But I have read several blogs that actually use bath soap or ivory soap. Another uses Dawn dishwashing liquid. Think I’m going to try that next. Thanks for your interest and for commenting. So appreciate it.

    • I have registered for your pinterest webinar. Is it phone only, or can I listen by computer. Can’t wait to learn more about it.

  4. Thanks for sharing! I think I’ve seen this on Pinterest as well and wondered if it worked?

    • It does. I’m going to make a batch for my mom. She really wants to try it. Thanks for your interest.

  5. I have that recipe pinned too and I’m glad to see that it really does work! I’m going to try it out thanks to your recommendation!

    • Yes it does. There is one that uses liquid dishwashing detergent. I may try that one next time. I just love the approximate 50 cents per gallon price. My next project is to try the Grace by Philsophy body wash. $1.34 a gallon. Now that’s a deal. Can you tell I’m all about bargains? :)
